44 History of Erie County, Pennsylvania, (Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co., 1884, Part VI - Amity twp), 4. "JOSEPH C. BISBE (deceased) was born at Black River. He was united in marriage while on a visit to Madison County, N. Y., with Sally Ann Morey, born in Plainfield, Conn., in 1806, a daughter of Giddison and Tamsen (Modock) Morey, who moved to Madison County, where they both died, the latter aged ninety-three. Mr. and Mrs. Bisbe lived in Madison County until 1857, when they moved to Crawford County, Penn., where they remained about six months, when they located in Amity Township, Erie County, November, 1857, moving on a new farm which they cleared and improved. They were the parents of ten children--Albert and Chene, residents of Wattsburg; Mrs. Ruth A. Reynolds, of Chautauqua County, N. Y.; Curtis C., of Amity Township; Ephraim, of Wayne Township; Mrs. Susan Cottrell, of Venango Township; Charles, of Amity Township; Mrs. Olive Daniels, of Eastland County, Tex; Mrs. Harriet Daniels (deceased) and George, of Chautauqua County, N. Y. Mr. Bisbe departed this life December 24, 1873; his widow still resides on the old homestead. Curtis C. is living with her and taking care of the home place. He also owns a farm of 150 acres. Curtis enlisted August, 1862, in the One Hundred and Eleventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was severely wounded in the left leg at the battle of Antietam, Md., September 17, 1862; on account of same was discharged January 19, 1863, and, although he tried to re-enlist, was not accepted on the same account. He was a brave, faithful soldier, and is now an influential citizen, enjoying the respect of the entire community."
45 Erie County Probate File # 18897 (Erie County, Pennsylvania, Courthouse). Joseph C. Bisbee died intestate, 24 Dec 1873 at 5 o'clock a.m. Sally Ann Bisbee is named administratrix. 102 Compiler's note. Susanna's death notice has her born in 1829. The 1900 census reports her birth as May 1835. Assuming that the month of her birth is correct, the census for 1850, 1860 and 1880 all support a birth year of 1829. In 1870 Susanna appeared in two households, her parent's and her own. The return from her own household supports a birth year of 1829, while the return from her parent's household has her born in 1827 (her brother Reuben was born in September 1827).

105 Compiler's note. The 1900 census gives Eunice Mallory's birth as March, 1833. We may assume the month of birth (March) is correct--everybody usually gets the month right. The 1850 census is consistent with a birthday in March, 1833. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 census returns seem to shave her age by 5-6 years. Those returns would have her born in 1838 or 1839. In all the censuses, children are listed from eldest to youngest; in her parents home, Eunice is listed between Susanna (born 1829) and her younger brother Morrow (born abt 1837). This would rule out a birthdate after 1837.

113 Compiler's note. All of the information about Andrew's birth comes from the census. In 1850, Andrew Mallory is living in the household of Nathaniel and Experience Mallory (assumed to be his parents), is age 4, and was born in Pennsylvania. This census is significant because it is closest to his actual birth. If his age is correct, his birth would have been in 1845 or 1846, depending on whether he has just turned 4, or will turn 5 in 1850. Because the census was enumerated in September, odds are good that Andrew already celebrated his 4th birthday earlier in the year, making him born in 1846. The 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses put his birthdate between 1845-1847.

Compiler's note. The only information we have on Morrow's birth is found in the census. In 1850 and 1860 Morrow Monroe Bisbee is living in the household of Reuben and Naomi Bisbee, whom we assume to be his parents.
1) On 3 October 1850, Morrow is age 13 (born 1836-1837), born New York.
2) On 19 Jul 1860, his age is 21 (born 1838-1839), born Pennsylvania.
3) On 7 Jun 1870 he is head of household, age 32 (born 1837-1838), born New York.
If we discount the 1860 census because the birthplace (and probably the age) is incorrect, the 1850 and 1870 censuses would be consistent with a birthdate between June and October 1837.

He was united in marriage July 5, 1869, with Fannie C., daughter of Joseph Bacon, by whom he has the following named children--Clarence Eugene, Florina Maud, Fred Laverne, Jessie Pearl and Merna Cora. Mr. and Mrs. Bisbe have been industrious and successful in life, acquiring since their marriage a fine farm of 200 acres of well-improved land, part of which was the old family homestead. Our subject takes great interest in the cause of education and has given his family good advantages. In politics he supports the Republican party."

131 Compiler's note. A biography of Joseph C. Bisbee family gives Sally Ann's birth year as 1806. Calculating from her age at death on her gravestone, gives us a birth year of 1809. The census supports either year. If she was born in 1806, Sally's father would have been only 14, and only 17 if she was born in 1809. It seems possible that Gideon Morey was her stepfather and might explain why Sally is not mentioned anywhere in Gideon's voluminous probate record.
132 Erie County Probate File 18898 (Erie County, Pennsylvania, Courthouse, Erie Pennsylvania). Sally died intestate 19 Feb 1890 about 10:00 p.m. Named children and heirs are A. C. Bisbee and C. B. Bisbee. Curtis C. Bisbee named administrator.
133 Sally Ann Bisbee Gravestone, Wattsburg Cemetery, Wattsburg, Erie County, Pennsylvania. Read by William Bisbee, 1998. "Sally Ann / His Wife / Died / February 1[3], 1890 / Aged 80 Yr. 4 Mo. 9 Da."
134 Compiler's note. There is a possible discrepancy between the date of death in the probate records and that on the gravestone which was worn and very difficult to read. Both sources need to be rechecked.
135 Obituary Abstract Card File (Public Library, Franklin, Franklin county, Nebraska). This is the only documented occurrence of Thad's middle name -- John. "Bisbee, Eddie G. d. 9-8-92 age 23y 4m 22d. Father T. John Bisbee, mother Caroline Bisbee later Caroline B. Gooding, wife of Christopher C. Gooding of Riverton, NE."
136 Thaddeus J. Bisbee Gravestone, Greenwood Cemetery, Franklin, Franklin, Nebraska. "T. J. Bisbee / 114 NY Vol Co. B (sic) / 1830-1894" -- photographed 2004 by Wm. F. Bisbee.
137
Erie County, Pennsylvania, Deeds vol. 142, p. 265, Olive S. Daniels et. al. to Curtis C. Bisbee, 2 Jul 1891 (Erie County Courthouse, Erie, Pennsylvania).
Abstract -- In consideration of $40 dollars paid by Curtis C. Bisbee, executor of the estate of Joseph C. Bisbee, to the following "heirs-at-law" of the said Joseph Bisbee, they convey to Curtis their entire interest in Joseph's estate.
MRS. ANNA J. HASKELL of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa and Charles E. Haskell her husband;
T. J. BISBEE and C. M. Bisbee his wife of Franklin, Franklin county, Nebraska; and
OLIVE S. DANIELS of Cisco, Eastland county, Texas and Charles Daniels her husband of the same place.
Comment: Only children who survive the deceased (or grandchildren if a child has since died) and their spouses, are considered "heirs-at-law." In a series of indentures made between Curtis Bisbee and Joseph's "heirs-at-law," Joseph's direct descendant is always named first, followed by the name of their spouse. Hence, Anna J. Haskell (granddaughter), T. J. Bisbee (son), and Olive S. Daniels (daughter) are acknowledged by Curtis to be Joseph's progeny.
138 History of Erie County, Pennsylvania, (Chicago: Warner, Beers & Co., 1884, Part VI - Amity twp), 4. The biographer states that Joseph and Sally "were the parents of ten children," whom he names. Thaddeus is not among them. Since we know he was Joseph's son, his absence suggests that Sally may not have been his mother.

Newspaper Clipping (Wattsburg Area Historical Society, date and publisher unknown.)
"Mr. A. C. Bisbee died at the County Farm on Sunday, March 25, 1906, from cancer of the stomach aged 72 years. Mr. Bisbee had been a resident of this vicinity a large part of his life, was a hard working and industrious citizen and a kind, accomodating neighbor. He spent about a year recently in Texas with his sister, Mrs. Olive Daniels, who did all possible to make him a comfortable home, but the longing for the old hills of Erie County was too strong and he came back only to sicken soon after and is now among those of the silent city. The remains were brought here by undertaker Fuller and the funeral held at the M. E. Church on Tuesday at eleven o'clock and interment in Wattsburg Cemetery, Rev. Parsons officiating."
152 Compiler's note. A Biography of Joseph C. Bisbe and Sally Ann Morey lists among their children "Chene" Bisbe of Wattsburg, Pennsylvania. A grandson (first child of Adelbert M. Bisbee) bore the name Alvah Chene. It is probable that subject's given name was Chene (pronounced Cheen), and that the familiar form "Cheney" (pronounced Cheeny) was used all his life. The pronunciation was provided by Gerald Hall (2004) of Wattsburg, great grandson of Cheney Bisbe, whose father and grandparents lived with "Cheney" and "Clisty", and spoke of them often. It was a family habit to add an "ee" sound to the end of many words, such as "Oneidee" for Oneida (New York) where they claimed to have lived at some point in their lives. Cheney's brother Charles moved his family to Texas in 1895. The descendants of Charles Bisbee, who still live in Eastland County, Texas, believe that Cheney's middle name was Ban. To this compiler's ear, "Ban" and "Ben" sound alike in Texas. Cheney's middle name may well have been Benjamin.
